Since it was founded in 1875 Leeds Kirkgate Market has survived the ravages of WW2, a devastating fire and globalization, remaining Europe’s largest working indoor market. Emblematic of a more human time before shopping malls and homogenised high streets became the norm.

This short film captures the essence of the market from the inside. Told by the hawkers and traders that know its history and imagine its future.

Made as a final year graduate film 2013. The Northern Film School.

Kirkgate The Voice of a Market is a glimpse into a diminishing cultural tradition that should be kept alive.
